Volunteer in Khokana

Bungamati, a traditional Newari village – a place where not much has changed over the last couple of centuries. As you walk the streets, you will find hundreds of masterful wood carvers and sculptors offering you excellently hand-crafted items at bargain prices. Most of them work from home and they may even offer you other articles for sale on the side. Generally speaking, the Newars who live here live rural lives, following in the steps of their fathers and forefathers which lived long before them. The Bungamati Newari enjoy an incredibly rich culture which extends over the fields of language, writing, art, architecture and even trans-Himalayan commerce. The people who live here have been practicing their skill or trade, which has been passed down for generations, for most of their lives and they always greet you with a smile.

Day 2   SIGHTSEEING TOUR IN KATHMANDU
Pick up from the hotel for a full day sightseeing of Kathmandu city, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath.
Kathmandu City is the political as well as the cultural capital of the country. Like any big city, Kathmandu has seen rapid expansion in the last decade, but despite the hustle and bustle so typical of metropolitan cities, its people remain as refreshingly friendly as ever.
Much of the heritage sites have been damaged by the April 2015 earthquake. Restoration is under process.
The magnificent temple of Pashupatinath with its astonishing architectural beauty is situated amidst a lush green natural setting on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Swayambhunath Stupa also known as the Monkey Temple is a UNESCO WORLD Heritage Site. It rests on a hillock 3 km towards the western edge of Kathmandu and is one of the most important and the most sacred Buddhist shrines of Nepal.
The April 2015 earthquake caused major damage to this Heritage Site and reconstruction is currently taking place.
Boudhanath Stupa is one of the most imposing landmarks of Kathmandu and is a center of Tibetan Buddhism. The stupa’s massive mandala makes it one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal. The ancient stupa is one of the largest in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The top portion of the Stupa was slightly damaged by the April 2015 earthquake. Currently renovation is under process.

Day 3 VISIT BHAKTAPUR DURBAR SQUARE
Bhaktapur or Bhadgaon, literally the ‘City of Devotees’ is a place that takes visitors back in time. Bhaktapur is still untouched by rapid urbanization and has managed to retain its brick paved roads, charming red brick houses and a way of life that goes back to medieval times. We also visit the Nyatapola Temple, which at 98ff. height, is not only the highest temple in the valley but also one of the best examples of traditional Nepali architecture.
Bhaktapur is one of the most affected areas of the April 2015 earthquake. Renovation is currently under process.
In the afternoon attend a short briefing and preparation for your volunteer work.
Overnight at Hotel.

Day 4   COMMUNITY WORK IN KHOKANA
After breakfast drive for about 25 minutes to Khokana, a village devastated by the April 2015 Earthquake.
Khokana is a small Newari village on the southern flank of the Kathmandu Valley, 11km/7miles from the city. It was established in the seventh century by the mighty rulers of Nepal during the Licchhavi period. It is a unique town in Kathmandu Valley due to its remoteness from modern civilization. We will help rebuild a community resting place devastated by the earthquake.
