Chisapani - Nagarkot - Changunarayan

The Chisapani-Nargarok trek takes you through the northern hills of Kathmandu and across the eastern part of the valley through oak and pine forests and the Shivapurai National park and to Nararkot, which is known for its spectacular sunrise, and panoramic Himalayan views. The trek from Nagarkot to Changunarayan and will visit the oldest temple in the valley and is listed as a world heritage site Changu Narayan The trek takes you through typical Nepalese countryside and exposes you to a few ethnic groups and gives you the chance to interact with local people.

Adventurers will also experience Kathmandu the biggest city in Nepal and one of the oldest cities in the world comprising three historical palaces known as Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Adventurers will learn about the culture, religion, history and the educational system. We will visits museums, temples, shrines monasteries and Stupas.

Students will be working in a government school and have a chance to interact directly with local teachers and children.

Day 1:
Arrival and pick up- transfer to the hotel.

Day 2:
Orientation and introduction to Kathmandu. Kathmandu is a harmonious blend of Hindu and Buddhist tranquility, the city retains a mystical ancient aura that leaves you feeling like you have stepped through the looking glass. Students will partake in a ½ day seminar on Nepal's history, religion, and architecture followed by a visit to the historic Kathmandu’s Durbar Square that offers magnificent examples of various architectural styles seen in the surrounding temples and shrines. We will also visit the nearby Kumari Temple, where a living goddess resides.

After, we will take a short bus ride to a UNESCO world heritage site, the ancient Buddhist stupa at Swyambhunath, Nepal’s definitive icon; situated on top of a hill, the stylized eyes of the Buddha look out in all directions. Guarding the lower stairs of the stupa is a band of amusing monkeys performing acrobatics.

Finally, we will visit Pashupatinath temple situated 5 km east of Kathmandu city, which is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to lord Shiva. Situated on the sacred Baghmati River, the temple was built in pagoda style with a gilded roof and ornately carved silver doors. Visitors will be permitted to view the temple from the river’s bank, as entrance into the temple is strictly forbidden to all non-Hindus. Behind the temple are the cremation grounds where we may witness an ancient Hindu cremation ritual. We will then return to the hotel with the late afternoon and evening free for leisure. Day 3:
We start with a seminar about Hinduism, Buddhism and education in Nepal. After, we work in a local school organizing libraries, painting, and teaching a lesson. Followed by a visit to the Patan Museum, where the Malla kings once ruled, lived and worshipped, and now offers magnificent examples of various architectural styles seen in the surrounding temples and shrines, we will see an outstanding collection of cast iron bronzes and gilt copper works mostly of Hindu and Buddhist deities. Evening free for exploring the fascinating shopping streets of Thamel.

Day 4:
In the morning, we return to work in the government school. We have lunch in Patan Durbar Square overlooking the temples. After, we will drive to Bhaktapur city, which is the third major city in the Kathmandu valley. We also will visit the Nyatapole Temple, which at 98ft is not only the highest temple in the valley, but also one of the best examples of traditional Nepali architecture. In Bhaktapur, we can observe locals weaving, making pottery, farming, and see traditional brick houses with intricate carvings. We will spend time exploring this well preserve ancient city on foot. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 5:
Kathmandu to Chisapani: After breakfast, we will drive to Sundarjal and begin trekking through pine and oak forest through Shivapurai National Park to Chisapani. Overnight in teahouse.

Day 6:
Chisapani to Nagarkot: From Chisapani to Nagarkot we will trek through lush forests into rural hillside farming land. In Nagarkot, one can see spectacular sunsets and sunrises. Nagarkot is one of the best places to see Kathmandu valley and the Himalayan Mountains. Overnight in hotel.

Day 7:
Nagarkot to Kathmandu: We will trek to Changu Narayan, the oldest temple in the valley, listed as a world heritage site. We continue to Kathmandu. There will be time for further exploring Thamel before meeting for a farewell dinner at a Newari restaurant with the accompaniment of traditional dancers. Overnight in hotel.
